Don is a co-owner in Tasman Bay Herbs, Motueka, New Zealand. Don started Tasman Bay Herbs in 1996 with his late wife Yoka De Houwer. Tasman Bay Herbs is classed as a boutique grower and sells a range of 43 herb and salad products to stores from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island. They do all of their own marketing and sell under their own brand.
Tasman Bay Herbs was:
o The first company in NZ to produce bagged salads – at a time when all other competitors were using plastic show bowls.
o The first company in NZ to use Modified Atmosphere Bags for salads to allow their product to breathe, retaining freshness, quality and enhancing the shelf-life.
o The first grower, in 1998, to be certified under the NZ GAP approved supplier scheme.
o The first grower in the world to produce Aquaponically grown fresh herbs to supermarkets (2009) and have their Aquaponic production approved as a registered Food Safety Programme.

─ He is a recreational pilot and flies his own Piper Pacer Bush Aircraft. He also flies a Tiger Moth and a Nanchang warbird.
